Hunter got a brand new pair of scriptures with her name engraved on them from her sunday school teacher. Jessie was pretty jealous because she wanted a pair of her own and didn't have any.
Well a few weeks ago I was having another one of those 'can't quit thinking and go to sleep nights' and got an idea to have the whole family go in on scriptures for Jessie's birthday. There wasn't much of a way that one individual could buy them alone, but if the whole family were to pitch in a little then we could surely get them!
I talked to my mom about this idea and she thought it was also a good idea and that Jessie would love it! One thing she questioned though was a case or carrier for them, but thanks to pinterest I had that covered!!
A while back I found a pin for scripture covers, pinned it, and then came re-across it when I was searching through my pins on my sewing board for the tie pattern for Jared's anniversary present.

After looking through the pattern I realized that this pattern was for the smaller compact scriptures and we wanted to get Jessie the regular sized set so I had to alter it first.

A week before Jessie's birthday I gathered the money from everyone and got the scriptures and supplies for making the scripture case. Sadly Mormon Handicraft didn't have any of the nice gunuine leather scriptures there because they are trying to sell out their stock of all the older model scriptures before they get the new 2013 scriptures in. So our choices were to either get the leather ones or wait and get none. We decided that the leather ones where almost as nice and we wanted them for her birthday not christmas (they may not have the new ones in for a few months) so we decided to go with the leather ones. On the bright side they were cheaper so we were able to get her a few things to go with them like scripture marking colored pencils. After getting the scriptures we got the material. I based my desicion on Jessie's favorite color: teal. She told me she liked teal and brown together but we couldn't find any teal material with brown design to put with a solid brown so we went with a light teal material with a darker teal design and a solid darker teal.
After getting the material and getting home I was too excited to make the scripture cover to wait so I began altering the pattern. After altering the pattern I cut out the material and sewed the pattern making a few adjustments along the way.
One adjustment I made was sewing on the pocket. I didn't like how the stitches were showing in the one the pattern showed so instead I hand sewed it on using the slip stitch that I learned while make Jared's tie.
I also used a thick interfacing so it would give the scriptures more support. And instead of using a button I got some of the magnetic snaps from wal-mart and used those.

Those are brilliant! I am thoroughly impressed. :) Can you make me a cover? (j/k) (kind of)
ReplyDeleteThanks! The cover was actually pretty easy to make after I readjusted the pattern.
